The Ritual of the Rave
OUT NOW
THE RITUAL OF THE RAVE
Double cd with unreleased live material
In the end of the 80 ties there was something new: Raves! People who would dance themselves in trance to new electronic music: ACID.
Although our music did not fit in this scene, I was very interested in this “trance” evoking music.
We still were recording on 4 track cassette but got some second hand music equipment, including the famous Roland bass line. A small silver plastic box which made it IMPOSSIBLE to create a normal bass line if you were not a educated musician.
All that came out this box were those “terrible” acid blibs. We hooked our Roland TR08 drum machine on it and recorded hours of jam sessions on cassette tape.
“Come together” was one of these acid experiments, Mark from the Alpha project put some vocals on it, we spread it under a different name ( Luce!) to the independent radio stations in Antwerp and it became a little “hit” in the scene.
In the beginning of the 90 ties we moved from Antwerp to the country side in Aarschot, cutting us of from the immense creative scene from Radio Centraal. We started to record on a 8 to 8 real track.
Aarschot was the place of Antler, a “big” alternative commercial label. I met Frank, one of the producers of Antler and we made “Joy of the World” for the Barramundi Antler compilation, under the name Haydra.
We got some gigs for The ritual should be kept alive, in Germany and Holland. Live gigs were spare, we did not have a manager, and were only invited by people who thought we were doing new and interested stuff. Almost nobody...
But the 90 ties brought new horizons: Germany was an immense country with people who liked “difficult” music. Our live gigs, were extended “jam” sessions of the songs we were making for ritual of the rave. Most of the songs were made with Herman Klapholz ( Ah Cama Zots). He was making music with midi on a computer, something we had never done with Hybryds. The basic of this project were all people involved with Radio Centraal, our independent radio station on which we run our Netwerk tape show.
The releases on DAFT from Dirk Ivens started to get attention in Germany. Our “ The ritual should be kept alive” invited us for some gigs in Germany, and later we got our booking agent : Mother Dance from Patty Hele. From 1996 on we suddenly got into the live scene in Germany and abroad.
We had 2 different live projects on the same time: The ritual, with guest musicians and the cyberpunk, me and Yasnaia. Slowly the ritual music had to make place for our cyber punk project. The ritual of the noise... Harsh industrial but still trance evoking music. In which the vocals of Yasnaia made the difference between industrial noise and evoking trance.
The ritual of the rave was released in 1995 but has been created piece by piece years before. It was a reflection of how we felt rave music should sound for our tribe.
This new Rave version is subtile re-mastered by TraumaSutra which brings out hidden musical details. The live versions, I kept as close as possible to the old original sound. Now with the digital mastering techniques I could have remastered it to the contemporary strong sound, but I felt it would become different music.
